Starting
in 1946, with $1,000 in cash and a $2,500 loan, Bo and Aubrey
became partners in the Pilgrim's feed store.
The two had been giving away 100 baby chicks with each feed
sack purchase. "We started selling baby chicks to farmers who brought the
chickens back to us to sell," said Bo.
They sold their first chicken from a pen behind their farm
supply store over 50 years ago. As the demand for the chickens grew, the first
steps were taken toward creating the modern, vertically integrated chicken
company, known as Pilgrim's Pride.
From the beginning, Aubrey and Bo Pilgrim saw and met consumer
needs. It is the desire to keep up with our consumer needs that keeps Pilgrim's
Pride searching for new ways to create innovative and healthy products for your
family.
Today, Pilgrim's Pride has become the second-largest poultry
company in America and the second-largest in Mexico. Pilgrim's Pride employs
more than 40,000 people and processes approximately 6 billion pounds of poultry
and 40 million dozen table eggs each year.
In 1966 Aubrey passed away from heart disease. Having had a
heart attack and stroke by the age of 53, Bo Pilgrim made a commitment to
create more healthy products for the benefit of his family as well as
consumers. He began working with doctors, nutritionists and scientists and
developed EggsPlus, the first egg to contain substantial amounts of Omega 3,
Omega 6 and Vitamin E.
His
latest venture, Eat Well Stay Healthy, continues the tradition of healthy great
tasting products by providing delicious and convenient products that carry the
American Heart Association's Seal.
